“Run down”

(Mark and Ruth have bought a new house and their friend Louis is visiting … )

Mark: (welcoming Louis in) You’re our first visitor.

Louis: This is a big house! You have a lot of space now.

Ruth: The last owners really let this house run down.

Mark: We’ll fix the place up ourselves by degrees.

Ruth: It’s going to take a long time but we’ll get it done.

Mark: When people come to visit we really want to show it off.

Louis: You have your work cut out for you.

Mark: We know but it’s our house. Our first house.

Louis: I have lots of tools.I’d like to help.

Mark: Great! We can use all the help we can get.
