“Cover for (someone)”

(Jack is talking to Richard on the telephone…)

Jack: So can you work for me on Thursday?

Richard: Sure, I can cover for you.

Jack: I need to take the day off to get some dental work done.

Richard: Do you need me to work for you on Friday too?

Jack: I’ll get back to you on that.

Richard: Okay.

Jack: Everything you need for the classes will be on my desk.

Richard: All right.

Jack: Just leave me a note telling where you left off.

Richard: Sure.
